Cannon 200D and multiple exposure

Sep 16, 2017

Hi,

I'm looking for a new body - the Cannon 200D appeals to me because of its weight.  However, Ideally I also want a multiple exposure function which it doesn't seem to have. The 70D has the ME function, but it's much heavier.

Can anyone advise a camera that is lighter with the ME option or even if there may be a way of adding it to the Cannon 200D?   Some cameras, i.e. Sony a6000 you can buy an app which has it;  but maybe this is for digital not optical cameras.....?

Cheers

Clare

Hello Clare. You want to do a lot of in-camera multiple exposures? If you only want to do it occasionally I'd say your much better off doing it on the computer at home. It's easy with an image editor like Photoshop, and you have a lot more flexibility and control that way.

Thanks Wilba, yes I know photoshop works probably better, but I want to do a lot of multi exposure images and like the immediacy of in camera.

Re: Canon 200D and multiple exposures

Clare, I have read that you can create HDR pictures in the camera with the Canon T7i (800D) by combining multiple exposures. I'm not sure if you can do it with the Canon 200D (SL2) camera, but I would think so. Just do an internet search and learn about it. Assuming that we can, after you purchase it you could experiment to see how it develops with the camera and how it develops with software. In the past I've heard that using the software is better for other cameras, but since I don't have the Canon 200D (SL2), I really don't know. Would the manual explain how to take HDR photos with the Canon 200D (SL2) camera?

Digirame:

The 70D seems to have a multiple exposure capability outside of HDR.  I believe that is what Clare is looking for.  There does not seem to be such a capability in the SL2/200D.

Hi, I'm pretty sure there is the HDR option in the Canon 200D;  but not multiple exposures - it's a different effect.  I know the Canon T7i has a multiple exposure function so I think this may be different....?

Yeah, you're right Steve - I was looking at the 70D as well, but it's a lot heavier..... I guess I"m going to have to compromise somewhere, or wait .....?

Re: Cannon 200D and multiple exposure

The SL2/200D does have a multiple exposure option.  It is available in scene mode and is labelled "HDR  Backlight Control".  It takes three exposures and blends them together in the camera to produce one image.  It works quite well even hand held.

Hi Mike,

Unless I'm mistaken the HDR function is different to multiple exposure mode.  The HDR will blend images, whereas the multiple exposure superimposes or overlays.  I'm a big fan of multiple exposure;  but not of HDR!

Actually, it has four more HDR options in Creative Mode.  One of them might give you something close to what you are looking for.  I just tried all four and the results were very interesting.

Re: Canon 200D and multiple exposures

OK, now I understand better.  I think we are talking about MEB (multiple exposure blending) versus HDR (high dynamic range).  It looks like we can do both with software from the one article I read.

The HDR functions in the SL2 all take three exposures and blend them into one image.  Is there something different going on with MEB?  I am just curious to know if there is a difference and what it is.

Multiple exposure looks like this:

Nothing to do with HDR.
