Dallas is known for a lot of big things — oil money, the assassination of President Kennedy, the Texas State Fair, and J.R. (yes, that J.R.,) to name a few. But it's also known for it's big-time shopping and impeccably decorated homes. And over the last decade, as the design industry in the Longhorn State has experienced a period of Texas-size growth, Dallas's most stylish shopping scene has increasingly concentrated in and around its Design District.

To navigate this burgeoning design destination, we turned to Jean Liu, one of the city's best interior designers, to share her favorite spots for shopping her way through the "Big D," as it's known. And, because a shopping day would be incomplete without refueling stops at hip cafes, restaurants, and watering holes, Liu's list includes those as well. Here's how to shop Dallas like one of the city's top tastemakers.

Nick Brock Antiques

Open since 1989, Nick Brock Antiques "houses the finest collection of 17th- and 18th-century antiques in the city. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, including the shop's corgi, Camden, make the visit all the more worthwhile," Liu says.

Stone Boutique

The Design District's luxury stone purveyor, Stone Boutique, "offers an expansive selection of natural, exotic, and luxury stone slabs," says Liu. "Being able to view each slab on screen thanks to their patented technology makes this part of any designer's process a dream."

Ceylon Et Cie

Flooded with textiles, accessories, and furnishings from the farthest corners of the world, Ceylon Et Cie feels as though you've stepped into an eclectic art gallery. "No passport needed to experience the world through the eyes of globe trotter and style setter, Michelle Nussbaumer," says Liu. "Even if you're not in the home furnishing mood, Michelle's collection of jewelry alone will make the trip worth taking."

Bell'Invito

"This Dallas Design District gem is a great spot for hostess gifts for the most discerning friends and clients," says Liu of Bell'Invito, a stationery, gifts, and accessories shop known for its in-house letterpress and engraving.

"Check out the artisanal stationery, monogrammed luggage tags, and marble candleholders," adds Liu.

La La Land Kind Cafe

La La Land Kind Cafe is "a bright and cheery organic coffeehouse with the purpose of hiring and mentoring foster youth. Enjoy a latte and avocado toast while feeling good about supporting a socially conscious business," says Liu.

James Showroom

"This beautiful Dallas Design District showroom teems with the latest in hot and haute fabric lines such as Rebecca Atwood, Rule of Three, Peter Durham, and Lisa Fine," says Liu of James, designer Meredith Ellis's showroom that first opened in Austin in 2015. Since then, Ellis has expanded to Dallas, and now Houston, to support the growing design industry in Texas.

In addition to textiles and wallcoverings, James carries select furniture, carpets, and lighting, including the U.K.-based line Hector Finch Lighting.

Forty Five Ten

"The most avant-garde retail concept around and a visual feast for the eyes," says Liu of Forty Five Ten, Dallas's fashion-meets-art-meets-design store. "Go for the unique home accessories such as B Zippy and Entler, shop the clothing—which includes an emerging fashion platform—then stay for lunch at Mirador."

In 2018, Forty Five Ten expanded to Aspen; in 2019, the retailer opened in New York at The Shops at Hudson Yards. In addition to brick-and-mortar locations, Forty Five Ten has a robust e-commerce platform that includes a vintage fashion and jewelry shopping section.

rise nº1

"It's a whimsical and dreamy place to have a perfectly prim and proper lunch," says Liu of rise, Dallas's "salon de souffle" and wine bar. "The souffles are consistently good and decadent. Our favorite includes the bananas Foster dessert soufflé."

Since opening in Dallas in 2008, rise expanded with a location in Fort Worth and plans to open in Austin in late 2020.

"This midcentury-modern Mecca is not to be missed if you're on the hunt for that something special. We always leave with big dreams...or big purchases," says Liu of Sputnik Modern. Find seating, art, credenzas, lighting, and more at this Design District destination.

"It's an inspiring place to spend time outside marveling at the depth and breadth of this sculpture garden," says Liu.

Foxyco

With its groovy midcentury decor, cocktail den, and dog-friendly patio, this Dallas Design District restaurant makes for a tktk ending to a day full of shopping.

"Stop in for the Smoked Old Fashioned or Mezcal Negroni [shown]—either is guaranteed to ease all your woes," says Liu.
